Launched in 2014 by Dr. Simon Humphrey, the Austin International Framework (AIF) Program empowers students to pursue international research opportunities while participating in UT Austin’s fall or spring exchange programs. Designed for chemistry students, this program offers a unique opportunity to combine advanced research, study abroad, and cultural exchange—all while earning credits towards your degree.
Why Join the AIF Program?

How Does the AIF Program Work?
- Plan Ahead - Contact the AIF Coordinator, Karen Larke (karen.larke@austin.utexas.edu) to start planning your exchange semester abroad.
- Gain Research Experience on Campus - International faculty are more likely to accept students who already have research experience. Start building your research skills at UT Austin by joining programs such as FRI or working in a faculty-led lab on campus. These experiences prepare you to tackle advanced international research and strengthen your application.
- Apply for UT Exchange Programs - Each exchange program has its own deadline, but generally you should submit your application by:
- Spring Semester: Apply by September
- Fall Semester: Apply by March
- Collaborate with Faculty - Once accepted into the exchange program, work closely with the program coordinator and your current research professor to identify and contact research faculty at your host university.
- Financial Support - Take advantage of travel scholarships and funding opportunities (typically $3–4K) to cover your overseas expenses. Bench fees are also provided to incentivize collaboration with international research labs.
