Studying abroad for a semester or full academic year is an excellent way to immerse yourself in another culture, learn different perspectives on science and gain the cross-cultural skills that will prepare you for your career. You can take coursework for your major, access lab and research opportunities and experience another country like local students. Planning early for a semester abroad is key.
There are two main pathways to complete a semester abroad:
Exchange Programs
UT Austin has exchange programs with over 150 of the world’s most respected universities, giving students access to some of the best institutions around the world. Students on exchange pay UT tuition and earn in-residence credit.
This is an ideal option for students looking to live abroad for an extended period while taking a full load of courses that will help them stay on track for graduation at UT.
Our Partner Universities have highly-ranked exchange programs that have been carefully pre-screened and selected by UT Austin faculty, offering a wide selection of pre-approved courses that you need to complete your UT science degree.
- Australia: University of Melbourne
- Australia: University of New South Wales
- Australia: University of Sydney
- Australia : University of Technology Sydney
- England: University College London
- Hungary: Budapest Mathematics
- Ireland: University of Limerick
- New Zealand: Otago University
- Scotland: University of Edinburgh
- Singapore: National University of Singapore
- Sweden: Uppsala University
- Switzerland: ETH Zurich
- Wales: University of Swansea
These programs can be competitive, so it’s important to research multiple programs and have a backup option. Spring semester exchange program application deadlines are generally late August through mid-October. Fall semester exchange program application deadlines are usually mid-February through mid-March. You can also use the My Credit Abroad tool to review programs and courses that already have approved course credit at UT.
Affiliate Programs
UT works with select third-party affiliate partners to offer additional options for our students to study abroad. UT students can study through any program offered by one of our affiliate partners. Please check their websites for program information and deadlines.
On an affiliate program, you pay a program fee to the provider instead of UT tuition, making this a good financial fit for out-of-state and international students. Your grades from these types of programs do not factor into your overall UT GPA and come back to UT as transfer credit, but grades will still post to your transcript. These programs are also generally less competitive than exchange programs and have lower requirements for admission and acceptance. Application deadlines can vary greatly between affiliate partners and programs.
