Summer is an ideal time to gain hands-on research experience, whether you’re exploring a new field or building on what you’ve learned in class. There are a wide range of opportunities available—right here at UT Austin, across the U.S. and even abroad.
Research at UT Austin
UT Austin offers a variety of summer research programs for undergraduates across disciplines. These include faculty-led projects, departmental initiatives, and competitive fellowship programs within the College of Natural Sciences like the CNS Advanced Summer Research Fellowship. Be sure to check eligibility and deadlines. To explore opportunities that align with your major, visit our Research by Major page and check out our Fellowships & Scholarships resources.
National Summer Research Programs
Many universities and research institutions across the U.S. host formal summer research programs for undergraduates. These include well-known initiatives like REUs (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) funded by the National Science Foundation, as well as programs like SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) and SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship). These programs typically require an application and offer stipends, mentorship, and professional development. They’re a great way to explore research at other institutions and expand your academic network. You can find a curated list of these programs on our Research by Major page.
International Research Experiences
Interested in taking your research global? There are several ways to gain international research experience. Programs like Arcadia’s STEM Summer Research offer structured placements abroad, and the College of Natural Sciences also offers Summer Experiential Learning Fellowships (SELF) that can support international research. In addition to formal programs, students are encouraged to reach out directly to international labs or use their academic network to find opportunities.
Cold-emailing researchers whose work aligns with your interests can be a great way to secure a summer placement outside of a structured program—just be sure to start early and communicate professionally. Explore our Research & Internships Abroad page for more information.
